Confronted by Islamic fundamentalism we must not be consumed by Islamophobia or overcome by naivety. As a country with a growing Muslim community today estimated at 26,000, it is imperative that we encourage that community to be part of mainstream Irish society and not to perceive themselves as outsiders living apart from it. We must ensure that we as a society take whatever action is necessary to support those within the Muslim community who have the courage to confront growing global fundamentalism and advocate moderation.
